A portfolio in the context of the discipline of project management is a collection of program and projects that are related to the achievement of specific goals and objectives at a cost that represents business value. The portfolio manager’s job is to ensure that all constituent projects and programs are managed with the purpose of achieving respective goals, objectives, and overall business benefits. One of the primary tasks of the portfolio manager is to ensure that risks across projects and programs are balanced and the collective portfolio doesn’t cross certain thresholds.
