A project management is a discipline and study of managing and controlling projects to ensure their completion within the constraints set up by the project sponsors. These constraints include scope, schedule, cost, resources, risk, and quality. There are different PM methodologies to guide project management work. These include but are not limited to PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) by PMI, Agile Methodologies, PRINCE2, Waterfall, and others.

The project management discipline includes the comprehensive knowledge including methodologies, tools, techniques, and best practices meant to guide project managers in their day to day jobs of managing projects. A project manager’s job is to meet the project requirements by working with the project stakeholder in balancing the constraints of scope, schedule, cost, resources, risk, and quality

A number of organizations have surfaced over the past few years that provide this knowledge. More prominent of those include the PMI (Project Management Institute) and PRINCE2.
