For all of those whose careers have been impacted or are afraid of being impacted (for example, with the recent COVID-19 virus impact), a recently published article on Forbes (“How Getting Laid Off Launched My Career“) has some good lessons to be learned. Below, I summarize some key points along with adding a few more.

  • A layoff (as bad as it can be) may turn out to be good for you in the long run if you stay in control and steer your next moves properly.
  • It’s important to choose the right approach and mindset when trying to get back on your feet.
  • Accelerate your efforts to build more skills and knowledge. Use this time as an opportunity.
  • Focus on the skills and competencies that you need for tomorrow. For this, ensure that you learn about the current market conditions and also where it’s heading.
  • Use your new skills as a pivot for your new job search.
  • As you go through the journey, take note of critical lessons learned. Let’s use life’s setbacks as a learning opportunity. But to do this, you must have the right mindset and attitude.
  • During this whole process, NEVER lose sight of your self-worth. Keep your spirits up!
  • No matter how bad the situation, constantly be out there marketing yourself. In the process, you will make more connections, build relationships, learn lessons, keep learning about the market, and more. NO ONE can take that outcome away from you! Get out there with the mindset that even if you are not successful, you will achieve those VALUABLE outcomes.

And the day will come when you will get back on track or possibly be on higher ground than where you started. It’s about believing in yourself and staying in control all the way.
